If you’re an Indian student planning to take the IELTS exam in 2026, here’s the major update you’ve probably already heard about: the traditional paper-based IELTS test is almost gone.
From 1 September 2026, IELTS in India will be available only on computer. The good news is that IDP IELTS are not requiring everyone to type the entire test. A hybrid IELTS format allows candidates to complete the Writing section by hand.

What’s Actually Changing in IELTS?
Not the test itself.
The same Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections will remain. The question types, difficulty level, IELTS band scoring, and overall test duration will also remain the same.
Universities, immigration authorities, and visa offices will continue to accept IELTS scores in the same way as before.
The main difference is how you take the test.
From September 2026, you will have two options:
- IELTS on Computer — Listening, Reading, and Writing are completed on a computer, including typing your essays. Speaking remains in person with a certified examiner.
- IELTS The Hybrid Option — Listening and Reading are completed on a computer, while the Writing section is completed by hand on paper. Speaking remains in person, as before.
There are no new question types or changes to the scoring system simply because you choose one format over the other. Your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) will not indicate which Writing format you selected.
Why Is This Good News for Indian Students?
Many Indian students have grown up writing examinations with pen and paper. Typing long essays under time pressure can feel unfamiliar if you are not used to it.
The hybrid IELTS option gives candidates a choice. You can benefit from computer-based Listening and Reading while continuing to write the Writing section by hand if that feels more comfortable.
Other practical benefits of computer-based IELTS include:
- Daily Test Availability — Candidates no longer need to wait for fixed IELTS calendar dates as before. Both computer-based and Hybrid testing, test sessions are available almost everyday, giving you greater flexibility to choose a date that suits your schedule.
- Faster results — Results are typically available sooner than with traditional paper-based testing. This can be useful when university application deadlines or visa timelines are approaching.
- IELTS One Skill Retake — If you are not satisfied with your performance in one skill, eligible candidates can retake that individual skill rather than repeating the entire test.
- Useful computer-based features — These can include headphones for Listening, an on-screen timer, easier navigation between questions, and adjustable text size.
If you are comfortable typing, you may prefer the fully computer-based format.
If handwriting feels more natural when writing essays, the hybrid format may suit you better.
Both formats use the same IELTS scoring system and are designed to provide the same level of assessment.
What Hasn’t Changed?
The following key aspects of IELTS remain unchanged:
- The four skills tested: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
- Question types and overall test difficulty
- Band score criteria
- IELTS score validity, which is generally two years
- Speaking test format, which remains a face-to-face assessment with a human examiner
- Recognition of IELTS scores by universities and immigration authorities that accept IELTS
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
You will need basic computer skills for Listening and Reading, regardless of which Writing option you choose.
If you select the fully computer-based version, practise your typing speed and accuracy. Writing an essay within the allocated time requires you to plan, type, edit, and complete your response efficiently.

IELTS Test Slots in Dehradun
From September 2026, IELTS candidates in Dehradun can choose between two test slots, subject to availability:
Morning slot: IELTS on Computer (CBD)
Evening slot: Hybrid – Writing on Paper.
