This is usually the first thought that arises after completing their 12th grade from some of the best schools in India:

Why Study Abroad?

These are some of the most common concerns I address as students and their families consider the next step in their academic journey.

India:

India’s higher education system has its own set of unique entry requirements, particularly for students aiming to join undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs.

  • Reservations & Seat Quotas: One of the most significant factors influencing entry into Indian universities is the reservation system. Reserved seats for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and economically weaker sections (EWS) can create opportunities for students from these categories. While this system aims to promote social equity, it can result in higher cut-offs for general category students in highly competitive courses.

  • Entrance Exams & High Cutoffs: Admission to prestigious Indian institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is based on highly competitive entrance exams, such as the JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) for engineering and NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) for medical courses. These exams often have extremely high cutoffs, which can make entry difficult for many students. For undergraduate programs, marks from Class 12 exams also play a significant role.

Overseas (Australia, USA, UK, New Zealand):

Admission criteria for overseas universities are generally more straightforward, though each country has its own set of requirements.

  • Australia: To study in Australia, universities typically require a high school with a good GPA. Additionally, students may need to provide English proficiency test scores like IELTS, PTE Academic or TOEFL.. For postgraduate programs, GRE/GMAT scores might be required for certain courses, and the selection process generally focuses more on academic performance and relevant experience.

  • USA: The U.S. follows a holistic admissions process, which includes high school GPA, SAT/ACT scores, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation. For graduate programs, students need to submit standardized test scores like the GRE/GMAT and proof of English proficiency through TOEFL/IELTS. U.S. universities tend to focus on a student’s overall potential, rather than just test scores.

  • USA: The USA is home to prestigious institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, and degrees from these universities are highly regarded across the globe.

  • UK: The UK boasts top-tier universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London, all of which are renowned for their academic rigor and global reputation.

  • Australia: International students in Australia can work part-time (up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time) and full-time during breaks. Moreover, Australia offers a Post-Study Work (PSW) visa that allows graduates to stay and work for 2-4 years depending on the qualification level, which provides excellent opportunities for career development.

  • USA: While studying in the USA, students on an F-1 visa can work part-time on campus (20 hours/week). After graduation, they can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing them to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months (with a potential extension for STEM graduates).

  • UK: The UK offers a Graduate Visa, allowing international students to work for 2 years after completing a degree. Students can work full-time during this period, providing ample opportunities for gaining experience in the UK job market.

  • New Zealand: New Zealand allows international students to work part-time (up to 20 hours/week during the semester) and full-time during holidays. Upon completion of their studies, international students can apply for a Post-Study Work Visa, which allows them to work for up to 3 years, depending on their qualification level.
