Study in Japan 2027 study abroad

Looking for an alternative to conventional study abroad destinations like the UK, Canada, or Australia for 2027? Japan is worth a closer look. It combines strong technology and research, English-taught degrees, and a wide range of scholarships.

Why Japan?

Japan offers a combination of academic quality, technology-driven industries and a different cultural experience. Some reasons Indian students may consider Japan include:

  • Quality education: Universities offer programmes across engineering, business, IT, science and other fields.
  • English-taught courses: Selected universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English.
  • Affordable options: Tuition at many Japanese universities can be lower than in countries such as the USA, Australia and UK.
  • Scholarships: Government, university and other scholarship options are available.
  • Career opportunities: Japan has established industries in technology, automotive, manufacturing, finance and business.

What You Can Study

Popular fields include engineering and robotics, computer science and IT, AI and data science, business and management, economics and finance, international relations, and hospitality and tourism.

Bachelor’s degrees take 4 years, master’s degrees 2 years, and doctoral programmes 3–5 years. Japanese language courses run from 6 months to 2 years.

What Will It Cost?

ExpenseApproximate Cost
Annual tuition¥10–18 lakh (about ₹5.8–10.4 lakh)
Monthly living costs¥80,000–¥1,60,000

Tokyo and Osaka cost more than smaller cities. Budget for tuition, accommodation, insurance and travel before you apply.

Scholarships

  • MEXT: A Japanese Government scholarship that may cover tuition, a monthly stipend and travel assistance.
  • JASSO: A typical monthly stipend of ¥48,000 for eligible students.
  • University scholarships: Merit-based and need-based awards, including tuition reductions.

These are competitive, so check eligibility, deadlines and renewal conditions early.

Can You Study in Japan Without Knowing Japanese?

Yes. This is one of the most common questions Indian students ask. Several Japanese universities offer degree programmes taught entirely in English. Students applying to these programmes may not need Japanese language proficiency for admission. Universities generally accept IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test, depending on the programme.

For Japanese-taught courses you may need the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test), has five levels, for Indian students planning to study in Japan, you will often see universities and Japanese language schools asking for JLPT N5, N4, N3 or N2. often N2 for degree programmes. Even basic Japanese helps with daily life, part-time work and job hunting.

Working While You Study

Students can work part-time with permission, up to 28 hours per week during term. Restaurants, convenience stores and retail are common options. Treat this as support for living costs, not a way to fund your degree.

After Graduation

Graduates with suitable employment can switch to a work visa. Those still job hunting may apply for a designated status to continue their search. Permanent residency pathways exist too, including the Highly Skilled Professional points system. A Japanese degree doesn’t guarantee a job or PR, though, and your course choice and Japanese ability make a real difference.

How the Visa Process Works

  1. Choose a university and course.
  2. Check academic and language requirements.
  3. Apply with supporting documents.
  4. Receive your offer.
  5. Arrange tuition and financial documents.
  6. Your university applies for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
  7. Apply for your student visa once the COE is issued.

Is Japan Right for You?

Japan suits students interested in technology, engineering, business or research who are ready to adapt to a new language and culture. Don’t choose it on tuition alone. Compare courses, total budget and where the qualification can take you.
