Australia moves to replace SVP (Streamline Visa Processing) with SSFV The simplified student visa framework for students applying to Study Abroad -Australia

On 16 June 2015 the Australian Government announced the introduction of a simplified student visa framework (SSVF) to support Australia’s international education.

Key changes under the SSVF are:

  • A reduction in the number of student visa subclasses from eight to two;
  • The introduction of a simplified single immigration risk framework for all international students.

Implications of the SSVF

  • All CRICOS registered Institutions will be allocated an immigration risk rating between ONE and THREE.
  • The same approach will also be used to allocate an immigration risk rating to each country.
  • The combined immigration risk outcomes of the student’s education provider and country of citizenship would be used to guide the level of financial capacity and English language proficiency related documentation that the student would need to provide with their student visa application.

Streamlined evidentiary requirements’. (S)

The student visa applicant will generally be able to satisfy the Australian Student Visa Department of their financial capacity and English language proficiency such as IELTS or PTE by declaration. This is similar to existing streamlined visa processing and Assessment Level (AL) 1 arrangements.
‘Regular evidentiary requirements’. (R)
Where ‘regular evidentiary requirements’ apply the student will generally be required to provide evidence of their financial and English language capacity as IELTS / PTE with their visa application.

Lodging a student visa
Application under the SSVF
Currently some students and agents are able to lodge student visa applications on the internet while others are required to lodge a paper-based application.
The SSVF will change the way student visa applications are lodged. It is intended that from July 2016 all students will be required to lodge their visa application online.
