What is TOEFL?

What has changed?
Starting January 21, 2026, TOEFL will introduce several important changes to improve fairness, accessibility, and the overall test experience:
- Scoring System – Each section will be scored on a 1–6 scale, rounded to the nearest half band. This aligns the TOEFL more closely with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- Reduced Bias – A humanised AI system will work alongside expert scorers, ensuring more accurate results and minimizing human bias.
- Upgraded Audio Equipment – All test centres worldwide will feature new, custom-designed stereo headphones, developed with the renowned audio brand Koss, offering clearer sound quality for Listening and Speaking sections.
- Faster Score Reporting – Students will now receive their official scores within 72 hours or less, helping them meet university application deadlines with confidence.
- Simplified Registration – A redesigned booking process will make it much easier to register, whether you choose a test centre or the TOEFL Home Edition.
These changes ensure that the TOEFL remains modern, fair, and student-friendly, giving test-takers the best possible chance to succeed in their journey abroad.
