From November 2025, and with more updates planned for January 2027, the UK government has announced adjustments to the Student and Graduate Route visa rules.
At first glance, these changes may seem intimidating but when you look closer, they are part of a practical effort to maintain balance in living standards, affordability, and long-term sustainability.
What’s Changing from November 2025?
From 11 November 2025, the maintenance funds (living expense requirements) for international students will increase.
- £1,529 per month for students studying in London (for up to 9 months)
- £1,171 per month for students studying outside London (for up to 9 months)
- A maximum of £1,529 can be offset if accommodation is prepaid
These updates reflect the rising cost of living in the UK, especially in major cities like London, where rent and utilities have steadily increased.
Rather than a deterrent, this move ensures that students arriving in the UK are financially prepared to maintain a good quality of life during their studies without unnecessary financial stress.
Changes to the Graduate Route (From January 2027)
The Graduate Route, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after their studies, will also see adjustments from 1 January 2027.
- The duration of the Graduate Route visa will reduce from 2 years to 18 months for master’s and bachelor’s graduates.
- PhD and doctoral graduates remain unaffected, they will continue to receive 3 years of post-study work permission.
- Importantly, students applying before 1 January 2027 will still receive the current 2-year Graduate Route visa.
This change aligns with the UK’s long-term strategy to balance post-study work with employability and integration. The emphasis is shifting toward students who use this time effectively to gain experience, build professional networks, and transition into sponsored employment or higher study.
Why These Changes Make Sense
It’s natural for students and parents to feel uncertain when visa rules evolve. But these adjustments are not meant to discourage international education rather they are aimed at:
- Reflecting inflation and real living costs, ensuring students can live comfortably and safely
- Encouraging meaningful employment and professional integration post-study
- Improving language and cultural proficiency, so graduates can assimilate better into UK workplaces and communities
- Maintaining fairness and credibility in the immigration system
In essence, the UK is continuing to welcome international talent it’s simply refining the framework to ensure success for both students and society.
The Bigger Picture
Similar updates have been seen across other popular destinations too.
Countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand regularly review their visa policies, adjusting financial and language criteria to stay aligned with economic realities.
The UK’s approach follows the same global pattern ensuring that international students are supported while maintaining the sustainability of its education ecosystem.
