Many universities require English proficiency as a key component of their admission criteria, with specific requirements varying by the level of study and program focus.

What universities typically ask for
For undergraduate programs, a typical minimum requirement is an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no individual band score lower than 6.0, or an equivalent score in a comparable test. For postgraduate courses, the minimum IELTS score generally increases to 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0, or an equivalent.
However, requirements can vary by program. For example, undergraduate nursing programs in Australia often require an IELTS score of 7.0 overall, with no band below 7.0, or an equivalent. Students are strongly advised to check the specific English proficiency requirements directly with their intended universities.

Which test fits you?
- You need a UK student visa
- Take a UKVI-approved version — IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI or LanguageCert SELT.
- You type faster than you write
- A computer-delivered test — PTE, TOEFL iBT or computer IELTS — plays to that strength.
- Speaking to a machine makes you freeze
- IELTS and LanguageCert both assess speaking with a real examiner.
- You are applying to the USA
- TOEFL iBT is the most familiar to American admissions offices, though most accept IELTS too.
- Your application deadline is close
- Computer-based tests usually return results sooner and offer more frequent dates.

Test preparation — frequently asked questions
Which English test is easiest?
None is easier in general — each suits a different kind of test-taker. Someone who types quickly and dislikes speaking to an examiner often does better on a computer-based test; someone who prefers a conversation often does better on IELTS. A diagnostic assessment shows which way you lean.
Is PTE accepted everywhere IELTS is?
Widely, but not universally. Acceptance is set by each university and each visa authority, so we check your specific course and destination before recommending a test.
Do I need a special version of the test for a UK visa?
Usually, yes. Many UK student visa applications need a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test, such as IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI or LanguageCert SELT. Some universities assess English themselves, so confirm with your university first.
How long should I prepare?

Can I prepare for more than one test?
You can, but the formats reward different habits, so most students do better choosing one early. If a university or visa route leaves you a choice, we will help you pick the one that fits.

Yes. The free IELTS mock test papers are on our website, and students preparing with us sit full mock tests under exam conditions.
